How does a liquid thermometer work?

A small amount of liquid in a closed chamber and part way up a long narrow tube. The liquid will expand as the temperature rises and contract as the temperature decreases thus causing the liquid in the tube to move up or down depending on the temperature. All that is needed is to mark the calibrations next to the tube which corresponds to the actual temperature.
